Because it’s affordable, durable, and easy to work with, concrete has been the go-to building material for most people. Concrete is also known for its versatility. With so many perks, it's no wonder many people are more than happy to use concrete for their construction projects.

If you’re ever thinking of starting a concrete project, you might wonder what type of finish you’ll want to get. But what is a concrete finish, and why is it important?

What is a Concrete Finish

Concrete finishing is when one smooths and levels poured concrete using different tools. This process is essential during construction because it can prevent the concrete from chipping and help set the concrete properly.

Benefits of Concrete Finishing

Other than preventing chipping from happening and helping the concrete set, there are more benefits when you finish your concrete. Here are some of them.

Durable and Solid

Properly finished concrete is more solid and durable than those that aren’t. Thanks to this, it can withstand the elements and endure heavy loads of weight or traffic without warping or distorting.

Water and Fire Resistant

Concrete, by itself, is a porous material. This means that concrete can absorb water. However, when concrete is finished, this gives the concrete a water-resistant trait. Additionally, concrete is a non-combustible material, which means it’s already fire-resistant. But finished concrete boosts that trait, making it even more durable against fires and heat.

Aesthetics and Low Maintenance

Concrete finishing gives your concrete a clean and polished look. This finishing also adds shine and gloss, giving your concrete project a classy and good-as-new vibe. Additionally, liquids and dirt stay on the surface with a finished concrete. This makes removing them easier and quicker with a sweep of a broom or wipe of a rag.

One can choose from a wide variety of finishes for their projects. However, two types are mainly used for concrete construction. These are the trowel and the float finish. However, what’s the difference between these two, and how can you choose which finish is perfect for your project?

Trowel Finish

Trowel finish is one of the most common finishes. This type of finish is mostly used on ceilings, interior walls, and exterior areas that aren’t exposed to wind and rain. Not only that but a trowel finish can also be used to fix damaged surfaces such as walls and floors. The name of this finish comes from the tool used, which is the trowel.

It has a flat, rectangular blade, that is mostly made out of steel or other sturdy materials. The trowel is good for finishing and polishing the concrete surface of small and medium-sized projects.

To achieve this type of finish, the stucco or plaster is mixed in a thin consistency. The trowel is then used to spread it over the surface evenly. Once the stucco-plaster mixture has hardened, you can either have it sanded, painted, or leave it as is.

Float Finish

A float finish is a plastering method to create smooth and level surfaces. Like trowel finish, this is also used on walls, ceilings, and floors. In addition, float finish is also used on other surfaces such as concrete slabs, sidewalks, driveways, and more.

A float is a tool that has a flat, rectangular, or rounded blade, which is usually made out of magnesium, wood, or aluminum. It usually has a handle attached for ease of maneuverability. This tool’s main purpose is to create a level and smooth surface on freshly poured concrete. It also fills holes and removes bumps and imperfections, ultimately creating a uniform surface.

To do this type of finish, a float or trowel is used to apply a thin, even layer of plaster on the concrete surface. The tool is then used to smooth, level, and remove bumps or protrusions, achieving a smoother and more level result. This may use lots of practice or experience to master, but it can significantly boost the concrete’s appearance.

Trowel or Float Finish

If you want a rough or textured look for your concrete, a trowel finish is for you. This is great to apply on exteriors and can provide non-slip features. This is also your option if you want a solid, durable surface to withstand heavy traffic or intense weather.

On the other hand, a float finish is more suitable if you aim for a smoother and more polished look. It is most suitable for interior areas where you want to apply that elegant and classy feel. If you're on a strict schedule or a tight budget, choosing a float finish is the best option.

Both finishes are applicable on any surface, and it all boils down to what you prefer or what suits your project the most.
